There has been a continuous debate in the country on whether working women should get paid leave during menstruation? When this question was echoed in Parliament, Union Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister Smriti Irani answered it.
Smriti Irani said that menstruation is not a handicap. In such a situation, there should be no need for any specific policy for ‘paid leave’. Irani gave this answer in response to a question asked by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) member Manoj Kumar Jha in the Rajya Sabha.
Smriti Irani said that the Menstrual cycle is not any kind of handicap, it is a natural part of women’s life journey. She also said that the government should not propose issues where women are denied equal opportunities, just because someone has a particular attitude towards menstruation.
