Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming movie ‘Emergency’, based on the life of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, will not be released in Bangladesh. The reason for this is that political relations between the two neighboring countries remain tense. The film depicts the situation during the Emergency declared in India by Indira Gandhi.
A source related to the matter said, ‘The decision to stop the screening of ‘Emergency’ in Bangladesh is linked to the current tense relations between India and Bangladesh. More than the story of the film, the reason for the ban is more related to the ongoing political dynamics between the two countries.’
According to historical reports, Indira Gandhi played an important role in the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan. However, the US had demanded her not to interfere in the affairs of both the countries. Nevertheless, Indira went ahead, as she felt that instead of giving shelter to millions of refugees, it would be economically better for India to go to war against Pakistan, which resulted in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
‘Emergency’ depicts the role of the Indian Army and the Indira Gandhi government in the 1971 Bangladesh Independence War and the support given to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who is called the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh. He called Indira Gandhi Goddess Durga. The film also shows the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the hands of Bangladeshi extremists, which is believed to be the reason why the film was banned in Bangladesh.
According to the information, India fought a two-front war against West Pakistan and then East Pakistan, Present-day Bangladesh was India’s only ally in the subcontinent. However, after the ouster of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power, the equations between the two countries have changed significantly. India now finds itself surrounded by hostile neighbors from all sides, including China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives and the Taliban’s terrorist government in Afghanistan.
Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ is set to release in theaters on January 17, 2025 after being postponed several times. Kangana has directed this film and is also the producer.
