Kerala Veterinary, John Abraham, Receives Patents For Inventing Biodiesel From Chicken Waste

A Kerala Veterinary Doctor by the name of John Abraham had invented a Biodiesel which is 40% cheaper and 50% less polluting than the general diesel. It has been made through the waste of slaughtered Chicken and can give a mileage of 38 km/litre.

John started his research in 2009-10 on producing biodiesel from the waste of broiler chicken and dead poultry birds. The research was being done at the Namakkal Veterinary College under the Tamila Nadu Veterinary & Animal Sciences University. The research was finally concluded in 2014 under the guidance of late Prof Ramesh Saravanakumar, who had filed for the patents in 2014 itself.

Now finally the patents have been approved as of July 7, 2021. It took 7.5 years for the patents to be granted to the inventor mainly because of a permission needed from the National Biodiversity Authority. The key material going inside the invention was a biological material locally sourced.

Bharat Petroleum’s Kochi Refinery had even issued a quality certificate in April 2015 for the biodiesel invented by John. Since then, a college vehicle was being run on this fuel only.

John also revealed the reason behind why he chose chicken waste to go with his research. He said that birds and pigs have a single stomach which offer higher fat saturation and this is easy to render oil under room temperature.
