The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha has announced a scholarship in memory of Prakriti Lamsal, a 20-year-old Nepalese student who was found dead in her hostel room on February 16 in an alleged suicide. Her tragic passing led to unrest on the campus.
KIIT and KISS founder Achyuta Samanta made the announcement on Wednesday after meeting Lamsal’s father and uncle to express his condolences. According to an official statement from the institute, the scholarship will serve as a tribute to her memory.
In response to concerns raised by Nepalese students, senior officials from Nepal’s Embassy in New Delhi visited the campus on Wednesday. They assured students that necessary measures would be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
KIIT has also taken steps to ensure the safe return of students who have not yet left for Nepal. Mr. Samanta personally reached out to Nepal’s Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba and Minister for Water Supply Pradeep Yadav, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to student safety.
Meanwhile, after completing legal procedures, Lamsal’s body was flown back to Nepal on Wednesday. The incident has prompted discussions on student welfare and safety, with authorities taking proactive measures to address concerns.
