A 45-year-old man from Uttam Nagar, Delhi, who claimed his house had been burglarized, was arrested after police discovered he had orchestrated the crime to settle his debts. The accused, Butta Singh, works as an AC technician and owns a shop in Sewak Park. Struggling with financial difficulties, he allegedly stole his own household jewelry and fabricated a robbery to cover his loan repayments, a police official stated.
Suspicious Burglary Report Leads to Investigation
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh said, “Butta Singh had lodged a complaint on March 21, stating that between 3 pm and 6 pm, unidentified people had stolen a gold necklace set, a gold mangalsutra, two gold rings, a gold chain, and Rs 45,000 in cash from his residence.” A case was subsequently filed at Uttam Nagar police station under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
During questioning, Singh’s wife informed the police that at the time of the alleged incident, she had gone out to buy groceries, her husband was at work, and their children were at school. Upon returning, she discovered that the jewelry was missing.
Lack of Forced Entry Raises Doubts
Investigators found no signs of forced entry, and it was revealed that only Singh and his wife had access to the house keys. Scrutiny of CCTV footage from the locality further raised suspicions, as no unknown individuals were seen entering the building. However, Singh himself was captured on camera entering and exiting the house within nine minutes during the reported time frame.
Additionally, his mobile phone records showed messages from a financial company regarding gold pledges, which led authorities to confront him with the evidence.
Financial Struggles Behind the Crime
Under questioning, Singh admitted to staging the burglary to manage his overdue loan payments. He had initially taken out a loan in 2022 to purchase his shop, followed by another for renovations. On top of that, he had financed a seven-seater taxi, but mounting financial troubles pushed him deeper into debt.
Following the confession, police recovered a gold necklace set and a gold ring from his possession. The remaining gold items were discovered to have been mortgaged at a pawn shop in Uttam Nagar.
Authorities confirmed that Singh had no prior criminal record. The case remains under further investigation.
