Massive Pipeline Burst Sparks Chaos on Mussoorie’s Kempty Road, Causes Water Wastage & Jam

A crucial water pipeline supplying Mussoorie suffered a major rupture near Hotel Wildflower on Kempty Road, creating havoc in the area. The high-pressure burst sent gallons of water surging onto the road, leading to heavy flooding and eroding a section of the highway. The force of the water also triggered a landslide, completely blocking traffic in both directions and causing a massive traffic jam.

Authorities revealed that the pipeline failure was caused by a crack in the welding of the main supply line, which pumps water from the Yamuna River. Before officials could halt the flow, thousands of litres of precious drinking water had already gone to waste.

This incident raises concerns about the resilience of the ₹144 crore Mussoorie Yamuna Pumping Project, which was launched in January 2020 to secure the town’s water supply. Commuters endured long hours of delay as road maintenance teams rushed to clear the debris and restore order.

Executive Engineer Sanjeev Verma confirmed that repair work was swiftly carried out, and the water supply was reinstated by evening. However, the damage left behind serves as a stark reminder of the need for more durable infrastructure. Officials are now assessing the affected road section to ensure long-term stability and prevent such disruptions in the future.

For now, life in Mussoorie is back to normal, but the incident has sparked fresh debates over the reliability of vital public utility projects.
