Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami received a death threat through email on Sunday, prompting his brother Haseeb to lodge a formal complaint in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district. Acting on the Superintendent of Police’s directive, the Cyber Crime Police Station registered an FIR on Monday, identifying the sender as Rajput Sindar. The accused also demanded a ransom of ₹1 crore from the cricketer, who is currently representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing IPL 2025 season.
The FIR has been filed under Section 308(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 66D and 66E of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008. Authorities have begun investigating the origin and intent of the threatening email.
Shami has taken six wickets in nine matches this IPL season at an average of 56.17. Despite his subdued performance in the league, he played a crucial role in India’s Champions Trophy-winning campaign, claiming nine wickets in five matches, including a standout five-wicket haul against Bangladesh.
This isn’t the first such threat in recent weeks. Team India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, also received threatening emails last month. His PS lodged a formal complaint with Delhi Police after the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed over 25 lives.
“We have been informed about an alleged threat mail received on an email ID associated with Gautam Gambhir…,” confirmed DCP (Central) V. Harsha Vardhan, noting that Gambhir is already under police protection.
Police are treating both incidents with urgency and heightened security measures.
