Mohan Singh Bisht Elected Deputy Speaker As BJP Dominates Delhi Assembly

Veteran BJP leader Mohan Singh Bisht, a six-time MLA, was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly on Thursday. His name was proposed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and seconded by Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa. Additionally, Anil Kumar Sharma put forth a second motion in his support, which was backed by Gajender Singh Yadav.

Bisht, 67, emerged victorious in the recent assembly elections from Mustafabad, defeating AAP candidate Adeel Ahmad Khan by a margin of over 17,000 votes. Before contesting from Mustafabad, he represented the Karawal Nagar constituency from 1998 to 2015 and reclaimed the seat in 2020.

The eighth Delhi Assembly is currently in its first session following the BJP’s sweeping win in the February 5 elections, which brought an end to AAP’s rule of over a decade. The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP’s tally dropped to 22. The Congress failed to win any seats.
