Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi To Be NDA’s Vice President Candidate? Speculations After His Resignation

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, former union minister for minority affairs, is a big name in Indian politics. He has recently resigned from the union cabinet after the completion of his Rajya Sabha tenure. President Ram Nath Kovind accepted Naqvi’s resignation with immediate effect and commanded that Smriti Irani, a Union minister, be given additional responsibilities, including the Ministry of Minority Affairs, on top of her current responsibilities.

After Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi’s resignation, there are speculations of him contesting the upcoming Vice-President poll as the candidate of the NDA. Currently, Shri M Venkaiah Naidu is the Vice President of the country and his tenure will be ending on August 10. On Tuesday, the election commission issued the notification for the upcoming Vice-President elections.

As quoted by news agency ANI on its official Twitter handle, former union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has said:

“I understand that my tenure in Rajya Sabha has been completed but my political & social tenure has not yet been completed. I will continue to work with dedication and concern for society: Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi”

The voting to elect the next Vice-President, will be held on August 6, from 10 AM to 5 PM in the Parliament. For these polls, 245 members of Rajya Sabha (including the 12 nominated) and 543 members of the Lok Sabha cast their vote. Though neither the UPA nor the NDA alliance has declared their candidates yet, there are speculations of Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi to contest as the NDA’s candidate.
