Neetu Chandra Files PIL Against Honey Singh’s ‘Maniac’ for Vulgarity Claims

Actress and filmmaker Neetu Chandra has moved the Patna High Court, filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh’s latest track, Maniac. She alleges that the song promotes vulgarity and objectifies women. The PIL, which is likely to be heard later this month, also names lyricist Leo Grewal and Bhojpuri singers Ragini Vishwakarma and Arjun Ajanabi, who were part of the song’s production.

Hailing from Patna, Neetu Chandra is known for her work in Bollywood as well as producing critically acclaimed Bhojpuri and Maithili films. In her petition, she has urged the court to intervene and direct the respondents to amend the lyrics, arguing that the track indulges in “overt sexualisation,” reducing women to mere “sex objects.”

A significant concern raised in her plea is the use of the Bhojpuri language in the song. She contends that it is being misused to “normalise vulgarity,” misrepresenting the culture and contradicting the principles of women’s empowerment.

“The song throws women’s empowerment out of the window,” Neetu stated in her petition, emphasizing the potentially harmful impact such content could have on society.

As of now, Honey Singh and his team have not issued a response to the allegations. The court’s decision will determine whether the song will be subject to modifications or face restrictions.

Released in February 2024, Maniac features actress Esha Gupta in its music video, which has been directed by Teji Sandhu.
