Banks will display recipient’s name before payment as part of new upi rules

The new upi rules from August 1 bring several operational limits and transparency enhancements aimed at boosting UPI efficiency and preventing system overload. These changes apply across all UPI-enabled apps, including Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.

Balance Check Limit: Only 50 Times Per App

From August 1, you can check your bank balance via UPI only up to 50 times per day per app. Any additional attempts may be blocked.

Linked Bank Account Views Capped at 25 Per Day

Requests to view your linked bank accounts are now limited to 25 per day per app. Background or automated requests without user consent are discouraged.

Status Checks Limited to Three, with 90‑Second Gaps

You may check the status of a pending transaction only up to three times, with a mandatory gap of at least 90 seconds between attempts, all within a two‑hour window.

AutoPay Execution Restricted to Non‑Peak Hours

Automatic recurring payments—like EMIs, SIPs, OTT subscriptions—must occur during NPCI-defined non-peak hours.

Mandatory Display of Recipient Name Before Transaction

Prior to confirming a UPI payment, the app must display the beneficiary’s name or bank details. This addition enhances security and reduces erroneous transfers.

Apps to Reduce Unnecessary Balance Checks

UPI apps are expected to reduce background balance check calls after payments. NPCI urges better optimization but hasn’t mandated automatic updates.

Compliance Requirements for APIs and Monitoring

Banks and UPI apps must monitor API usage and enforce these limits. Compliance is audited, and failures may invite penalties, access restrictions, or suspension of onboarding new users.

The new upi rules reflect NPCI’s drive to streamline digital payments infrastructure. As India continues to process over 18 billion UPI transactions per month, these measures help sustain stability and speed.
