Nidhi Tewari, a seasoned Indian Foreign Service officer from the 2014 batch, has been appointed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new Private Secretary. Currently serving as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), her transition to this prestigious role has been officially approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
The Ministry of Personnel announced on March 29 that Tewari’s tenure in this position would continue alongside her current role or as per further government directives. Her promotion comes with an elevation to Level 12 of the pay matrix.
A native of Mehmurganj in Varanasi-PM Modi’s parliamentary constituency-Tewari’s journey began as an Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi before she cracked the Civil Services Examination, securing an impressive 96th rank.
She initially joined the PMO in 2022 as Under Secretary and was promoted to Deputy Secretary in 2023. Before that, she played a key role in the Ministry of External Affairs, working in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division.
At the PMO, she managed crucial matters related to foreign policy, national security, atomic energy, and Rajasthan’s affairs. She worked closely with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, making notable contributions during India’s G20 presidency.
Tewari becomes the third Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, following Vivek Kumar and Hardik Satishchandra Shah, and is expected to bring her diplomatic expertise to this influential role.
