Punjabi Veteran Actor Nirmal Rishi Receives Padma Shri Award

On Thursday, the Padma awards were announced on the eve of the 75th Republic Day. This year 110 personalities will be given the Padma Shri award. 

These include two people from Punjab and four from Haryana. Nirmal Rishi and Pran Sabharwal of Punjab have been awarded the Padma Shri award for their incomparable contribution in the field of art.

Nirmal Rishi is a Punjabi film and television actress. She is best remembered for her role as Gulabo Masi in her debut film Long Da Lishkara (1983). She was born in 1943 in Khiva Kalan village of Mansa district.

Her father’s name was Baldev Krishna Rishi and mother’s name was Bachani Devi. She was very fond of theater since his school days. She chose to become a physical education instructor and joined Government College, Patiala for physical education. 

Nirmal Rishi acted in more than 60 films. The legendary actress also came into limelight with Punjabi films like Nikka Zaildar and The Great Sardar.

Nirmal Rishi reminisces about her old times and says They discovered my talent in mono acting in Rajasthani during my college days and imparted invaluable lessons about the art through hands-on experience. Workshops led by luminaries like Ebrahim Alkazi and Balwant Gargi provided us with fresh insights into the world of theatre. Those were truly the golden years”.
