Nitin Gadkari Says Indian Roads Will Surpass US Highways Within Two Years

Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, stated on Tuesday that India’s road infrastructure will surpass that of the United States within two years. He emphasized the rapid advancements in the sector, saying, “The changes this year and next year will be so significant that earlier I used to say our highway road network would match that of the US, but now I say that within two years, our highway network will be even better than the US.” Speaking at the Times Drive Auto Summit and Awards 2025, he highlighted key developments shaping the nation’s transportation landscape.

Gadkari expressed optimism about India overtaking the US in electric vehicle adoption and manufacturing over the next five years. He also noted that improved highways will significantly shorten travel times between major cities like Delhi, Dehradun, Jaipur, and Bengaluru.

Addressing Tesla’s entry into India, he reiterated, “It is an open market; whoever has the power, come and make it and compete in the prices.” He added that Indian manufacturers prioritize quality over cost.

Furthermore, he stressed his commitment to reducing logistics costs—currently at 14-16%—to single digits, making India globally competitive. The minister also set an ambitious target of constructing 60 kilometers of highways daily to accelerate development.
