Punjab: AIG Ashish Kapoor Nabbed By Vigilance Bureau For Taking A Bribe Of Rs 1 Crore

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau, four years after  hailing AIG Ashish Kapoor for bringing laurels to the nation by winning two gold medals in the World Police and Fire Games-2019, China, the VB, on Thursday, nabbed AIG (Assistant Inspector General), Punjab Police, for taking ₹1 crore bribe.

Not only AIG Ashosh Kapoor, but DSP (Intelligence) Pawan Kumar and ASI Harjinder Singh have also been named as defendants in the case along with him. Additionally, a case against the accused has been lodged, according to a VB spokeswoman, under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC, as well as Sections 7 and 7-A of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Furthermore, according to the spokesperson, Poonam Rajan of Kurukshetra met Ashish when he was serving as Superintendent at the Amritsar Central Jail in 2016. She was reportedly on judicial remand at the time. In one instance, Ashish allegedly helped Poonam’s mother Prem Lata to assist Poonam in her bail when she was under police remand at the Zirakpur police station with her mother Prem Lata, brother Kuldeep Singh, and sister-in-law Preeti.

As per the media reports, the Vigilance Bureau spokesman said, Preeti was “found innocent” in the matter by Ashish, Pawan, ASI Harjinder, and the SHO of Zirakpur. Moreover, Ashish allegedly secured Prem Lata’s signature on different checks totaling ₹1 crore in exchange for the favour and encashed these in the names of his acquaintances through the ASI.

Reportedly, AIG Ashosh Kapoor, who worked in the vigilance department during the Congress regime, was considered as a blue-eyed boy of the top officials then. As a result, he was given all the important cases to investigate. He has supervised over numerous notable cases, including the multi-billion dollar irrigation scheme.

Kapoor’s name had lately come up in the forest scam, in which two former forest ministers and prominent members of the department’s staff have been charged. According to reports, Kapoor investigated the cases of corruption in the forest department during the regime of the Congress party in Punjab.
