Punjab CM Inaugurated And Unearthed 492 Martyrs Name At Jallianwala Bagh Centenary Memorial

Jallianwala Bagh Centenary Memorial Park has been set up in the memory of all those who died in the massacre of April 13, 1919. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has inaugurated the park on Saturday prior to the occasion of India’s Independence day.

The CM dedicated the memorial to the people of Punjab, saying “this second memorial at the site of the gory massacre is a tribute to all those unknown martyrs who laid down their lives during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.”

“Though the exact number of lives lost is not clear, the DC office has the names of only 488 who fell to the bullets of the British led by General Dyer, who fired on the orders of the then Governor of Punjab, Michael O’ Dwyer”, said the CM.

Not only this, Captain said a special team of historians and research scholars had been formed by the GNDU for carrying out research on martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh and freedom fighters seized at Cellular Jail, Port Blair.

Once the research was over, the names of more martyrs might be unearthed, he said. More names will be added and sufficient space has been kept on the columns of the memorial to comprise more names in the future.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has been able to track and felicitate the family members of only 29 martyrs.
