Indeed, it’s seen as one of the major steps taken by the Central government in the medical and healthcare sector. As per the information, the government has spent more than ₹660 crore on the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre built in Mohali, equipped with a capacity of 300 beds and all modern facilities to treat all type of cancers.

Moreover, be it radiotherapy, surgery, medical oncology – Chemotherapy, or immunotherapy and Bone marrow transplant, all these modalities would be now available at this cancer hospital. This project focuses on facilitating the cancer patients in Punjab and its neighbouring states, as the number of cancer patients has reportedly increased in the state.

The rising cases of cancer in Punjab is a matter of concern. The seriousness of the isse can be understood as a train from Bathinda has been also called the “cancer train” as the patients have to go to other states for treatment, which is very expensive. Moreover, the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital would be a hub of cancer treatment now.

However, a 100-bed capacity cancer hospital has been functional in Sangrur, Punjab, since 2018. But, this isn’t sufficient due to the continuous increase in the number of cancer patients in the state. The Central government’s initiative to cover the cancer treatment under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, focuses on facilitating the people, saving them from the expensive treatments.
