Punjab Police: 141 Proclaimed Offenders, Absconders Arrested In Drug Smuggling Cases In A Month

According to IG headquarters Sukhchain Singh Gill, the Punjab Police have detained 472 drug nabbed after filing 354 first information reports (FIRs), including 36 commercial ones, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act across the state in the past week.

“In order to get away from the police suspicion, drug dealers have started using women as smugglers,” said IG headquarters Sukhchain Singh Gill, at a press conference.

Exposing the new ways in drug smuggling, Dr. Gill claimed that drug peddlers have started using women as an excuse to safely conduct drug trafficking. “Additionally, it has been seen that drug smugglers now use public transportation networks, which requires more human intelligence to monitor them,” he further added.

In the last week, Punjab Police have detained 472 drug peddlers and suppliers after filing 354 first information reports (FIRs), including 36 commercial ones, in the state under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) act.

The IGP further stated that the Punjab Police has been doing everything possible to keep the youth away from drugs, in addition to assisting in the rehabilitation of those who have already succumbed to this menace, to tighten the noose around drug smugglers and suppliers.

He also added that all the CPs/SSPs have been taking strict action to control the drug menace in their respective districts. They’ve been doing various public meetings, visiting the drug-affected villages, attending seminars, joint meetings with MLAs, Sarpanches, Councillors, and collaboration with NGOs and youth organisations.

The Punjab police have been actively working against the drug peddlers in the state. The rising drug addiction is one of the major issues in the border state of Punjab. Eradicating the drug menace from the state was one of the major poll promises of the Aam Aadmi Party during the elections.
