In a major crackdown against drugs smuggling in Punjab, over 151 kg of heroin and 11 quintals of poppy husk, each worth more than ₹800 crore in the black market, have been burned in a furnace in Amritsar by the Punjab police. Notably, under the direction of IG (counter intelligence) Mr. Rakesh Agrawal, a high-level drug disposal committee of contraband, finished the entire process of destroying drugs.

Furthermore, the committee also included Sukhminder Singh Mann, assistant inspector general (AIG) state special operation cell (SSOC), Fazilka, Lakhbir Singh, assistant inspector general (AIG) CI, Amritsar, Amarjit Singh Bajwa, and DSP SSOC Harwinderpal Singh. On Tuesday, the case materials for drug cases that had been reported under the NDPS Act, 1985, at SSOC Amritsar and Fazilka, had been destroyed at Khanna Paper Mill, Amritsar.

As claimed by an official spokesperson of the Punjab police, the Range Level Drug Disposal Committee had also given a disposal certificate for opium weighing 40.5 kg for depositing in the Government Opium & Alkaloid Works, Neemuch (Madhya Pradesh). Moreover, this is seen as a major crackdown against the all-time rising issue of drugs smuggling in the border state of Punjab.

To eradicate the drugs issue from the state, had been a major promise of the Aam Aadmi Party during the assembly elections held in February this year. Notably, this is one of the burning issues in Punjab for a long time. Moreover, it’s a matter of concern for the people as well as the government as there are cases of youth losing their lives due to drug addiction.

Furthermore, the destruction of these drugs worth ₹800 crore has given a clear message to drug peddlers in the state that strict action against them would be taken anytime soon. Not just Amritsar, but even in Ludhiana, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav himself led the crackdown against drugs. The operation was conducted from 11 AM to 4 PM across the state at various locations.

Notably, the officials of ADGP/IGP rank, were deputed to each police district in the state. Moreover, the goal of this operation, according to DGP Gaurav Yadav, was to instil terror among the anti-social groups by increasing police presence and boosting public confidence.
