Punjab Renames 115 Government Schools to Honour Freedom Fighters, Martyrs and Iconic Personalities

In a heartfelt move to celebrate Punjab’s rich legacy, the AAP-led state government has renamed 115 government schools after prominent personalities, including freedom fighters, martyrs, and globally renowned sports icons. This initiative was shared by Punjab’s School Education Minister, S. Harjot Singh Bains, during a press conference at Punjab Bhawan.

The Minister highlighted that 25 of these schools were renamed on July 18, 2025, in honour of various freedom fighters and martyrs. Among the latest updates, Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann announced that a government school in Beas village, Jalandhar, will now bear the name of legendary marathon runner Sardar Fauja Singh.

To make these tributes more meaningful, the government plans to display pictures and life stories of these inspiring individuals in the schools named after them. The idea is to motivate students by connecting them with the values and sacrifices of Punjab’s heroes.

Minister Bains also pointed out that in 2023, the Government High School in Khatkar Kalan was renamed after Shaheed Bhagat Singh. He emphasized that the state is committed to recognising those who brought pride to Punjab.

He further added that the department is developing a curriculum to educate students about the harmful effects of drugs and welcomed the inclusion of Sikh history in school syllabus.
