Punjab: Shiromani Akali Dal Expels Bibi Jagir Kaur For Contesting SGPC Chief Election

Former minister Bibi Jagir Kaur has been expelled from Shiromani Akali Dal. As per the information, Bibi Jagir Kaur, despite the party declaring Harjinder Singh Dhami as its official candidate for SGPC elections, decided to contest the elections, the reason why party president Sukhbir Singh Badal expelled her from the party.

Notably, Bibi Jagir Kaur is one of the heavyweight leaders of Shiromani Akali Dal. Apart from being a former minister, she was the SGPC president in 1999, 2004 and 2020. Moreover, she was expecting the party to again announce her candidature, however, the SAD announced Harjinder Singh Dhami as its candidate.

Surprisingly, Bibi Jagir Kaur even released her own manifesto at a press conference in Jalandhar on Sunday. She was given a notice by the party after her announcement of contesting the SGPC elections. However, she did not reply to the party’s notice and decided not to step back. Moreover, now Bibi Jagir Kaur has been suspended from Shiromani Akali Dal.

However, Bibi Jagir Kaur questioned her suspension, asking that when the party’s organisational structure has been dissolved, according to which clause has she been suspended from the party? She stated, “Who complained against me? As per what clause of the party’s constitution have I been suspended/expelled?”

After Bibi Jagir Kaur refused to change her mind about contesting the election, the party made its move. The SAD’s choice to do so also constituted a significant change from its custom of announcing its nominee on election day. Iqbal Singh Lalpura, chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, was previously slammed by the party for allegedly trying to undermine the SGPC and soliciting support for Bibi Jagir Kaur’s election campaign.

Now the party has expelled Bibi Jagir Kaur from the party, however, she has questioned her suspension and decided not to step back.
