Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday urged the Lok Sabha to hold a discussion on voter lists, an issue that has raised concerns among multiple political parties. Speaking during Zero Hour, he acknowledged the government’s role but insisted, “We accept your remarks that the government does not make voter lists. But we demand a discussion on the issue.” He stressed that questions about voter lists have emerged nationwide, with opposition voices highlighting discrepancies in states like Maharashtra.
Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy also raised concerns, pointing to flaws in voter lists. He cited West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s claims about identical EPIC numbers appearing in Murshidabad, Burdwan, and Haryana. Roy stated that a Trinamool delegation would meet the Chief Election Commissioner to discuss these irregularities.
Demanding a comprehensive revision, he emphasized the urgency ahead of the upcoming West Bengal and Assam assembly elections. Roy alleged inflated voter lists in Maharashtra and Haryana and cautioned against similar issues arising in poll-bound states. “Let the total voter lists be thoroughly revised. The Election Commission should answer to the country why some mistakes occurred in the lists,” he said, pressing for transparency and accountability.
