During the first day of his two-day tour in Raebareli, Congress MP and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi paid homage to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose by unveiling his statue, aiming to salute one of India’s greatest freedom fighters. The ceremony, steeped in patriotic sentiment, was woven into a larger agenda of sustainable growth.

Gandhi’s visit also marked the launch of a 2 MW rooftop solar plant and an EV charging station in Kundanganj, underlining his focus on clean energy and future-ready infrastructure. He further distributed solar-powered carts to economically weaker families, promoting both empowerment and environmental care.
However, what began as a respectful commemoration sparked controversy online. A video showing Gandhi casually placing a garland and tossing flowers at the statue ignited social media criticism. Some users called his posture “disrespectful,” with others accusing him of insulting Netaji’s legacy. Critics dubbed his actions “careless” and “arrogant,” despite no ill intention being explicitly visible.

Amid the backlash, Gandhi’s supporters came forward, applauding his environmental and social initiatives and urging him to take inspiration from Bose’s patriotism in his political journey.
The incident highlights the intense emotional value Indians attach to their national heroes. While Gandhi continues his outreach in Raebareli and Amethi, the episode reflects the thin line public figures tread between tribute and controversy.
