Rohit Sharma Retires from Test Cricket, Confirms ODI Focus Ahead of England Series

Rohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing an end to a significant chapter in his international career. The decision was shared via his Instagram story on Wednesday, where he stated his intention to continue playing only the ODI format. “The star batter announced the decision on his Instagram story on Wednesday and made it clear that he will continue to play only the ODI format.” This move follows his earlier retirement from T20Is after the 2024 T20 World Cup.

The announcement also settles the uncertainty that had been surrounding his Test future, particularly after his disappointing performance in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. “Rohit Sharma has thus ended all speculations about his future in the longest format after facing question marks following a poor show in the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.”

Throughout his Test career, the 38-year-old amassed 4301 runs in 67 matches, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, at an average of 40.57. He played a key role in the Indian Test setup, especially in the latter half of his career, and also captained the side to the World Test Championship final against Australia. With his departure, India will now look toward a new Test captain for the upcoming five-match series in England, with Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant emerging as potential candidates.
