Saudi Arabia’s Sleeping Prince: 20 Years in a Coma, Family Clings to Hope

Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, known as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” has remained in a coma since 2005 following a devastating car accident in London while attending military college. The crash resulted in a severe brain hemorrhage, leaving the prince in a persistent vegetative state.

Despite medical prognoses suggesting minimal chances of recovery, his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, has steadfastly refused to withdraw life support, expressing unwavering faith in a divine miracle.  Over the years, the family has shared moments of hope, including a 2020 video where the prince appeared to move his hand in response to his aunt’s voice.  In 2021, another video showed him lifting his hand multiple times upon a doctor’s request.

Regular updates from family members, particularly Princess Rima bint Talal, have kept the public informed.  In 2022, she posted a photo of the prince draped in the Saudi flag to commemorate National Day.  Despite occasional rumors about his passing, the family has consistently provided evidence of his continued life, including a 2024 image confirming his unchanged condition.

Now 36, Prince Al-Waleed’s prolonged coma has drawn attention worldwide, symbolizing both the fragility of life and the enduring strength of familial love and hope.
