SGPC President Calls For Ban On Wamiqa Gabbi Starrer Web Series GRAHAN

The president of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Bibi Jagir Kaur has expressed her disappointment with the recently announced Disney+Hotstar web series titled ‘Grahan’. The web series marking Punjabi actress Wamiqa Gabbi’s OTT debut was set to release on 24th of June but has now been called for a ban by the SGPC president.

According to Bibi Jagir Kaur, the web series is based on the 1984 Hindu-Sikh riots and depicts a Sikh character in an objectionable manner. And for this reason, she has demanded a ban on the release of the series from the Union Information And Broadcasting Ministry.

According to an official statement by her, “A Sikh character has been portrayed in an objectionable manner in a web series called Grahan based on the 1984 Sikh genocide. In the web series, the charge of Sikh genocide is being levelled against a Sikh character which is highly condemnable and fabricated.”

Even a legal notice has been sent by a witness of the genocide Nirpreet Kaur to Ajay G Rai, the producer of the series and Sunil Ryan, the head and president of Disney+Hotstar. SGPC stands in full support of the legal notice and demands the ban.

She also went onto add that the series would hurt Sikh sentiments and would work as a fuel in fire, making the community recall the deadly incidents of 1984 Sikh Genocide. The Genocide took place in the month of June itself, the wounds are still fresh and the series is just not right from sentimental point of view.

There has been no official statement from the makers of the series or the people the legal notice has been sent against. There are no statements regarding the acceptance of the ban of the series or removal of the objectionable part yet, but we will keep you updated
