Shahbaz Ansari, a key accused in supplying weapons used in the m*rder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, has gone missing after being granted interim bail. His disappearance has sparked widespread concern over the misuse of bail in sensitive criminal cases involving terror links and gang networks.
Ansari, who hails from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, was released from custody on June 18 after citing his wife’s spinal surgery as the reason for seeking a one-month interim bail. He was ordered to surrender by July 18 but has failed to return, with authorities now suspecting he had no intention of coming back.
According to the Indian Express, police investigations have revealed that the hospital named in Ansari’s bail plea never performed the surgery he claimed. Further, the documents submitted were found to be misleading, and the surety provided is under scrutiny for being potentially fraudulent. After these discoveries, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) cancelled his bail on July 8 and launched a search operation to locate him.
Officials say Ansari’s phone has been switched off since his release and there has been no credible trace of his whereabouts. He is believed to be part of the network that supplied arms to Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang, which is accused of assisting in Sidhu Moosewala’s m*rder in May 2022.
Ansari’s disappearance has raised serious concerns about how easily bail can be misused, even in high-profile and dangerous cases. Legal experts and law enforcement officials are calling for a review of how bail is granted in cases involving gang activity and terrorism-related charges. The NIA is reportedly considering more stringent bail vetting procedures going forward.
The case has also reignited public debate over balancing the right to bail with national security and public safety. Many are questioning whether the legal system needs tougher safeguards to prevent such incidents, especially when dealing with individuals linked to organized crime.
As the manhunt for Shahbaz Ansari continues, authorities are urging anyone with information on his location to come forward.
