Shaktikanta Das Appointed Principal Secretary-2 to PM Modi After RBI Tenure

Shaktikanta Das, former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has been appointed as the ‘Principal Secretary-2’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet confirmed the appointment in a recent circular, stating that it would take effect as soon as he assumes office. His tenure will align with that of the Prime Minister or continue until further orders are issued.

Das, aged 67, is a distinguished career diplomat who took office as RBI Governor in 2018 after the sudden resignation of Urjit Patel. He was a 1980-batch IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre and has an extensive educational background. He holds a master’s degree in history from St Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and a postgraduate degree in public administration from the University of Birmingham.

Das played a crucial role in India’s economic landscape, particularly during the government’s landmark decision to demonetize high-value currency notes in 2016. As the Economic Affairs Secretary at that time, he was one of the key figures behind the move.

Das’s six-year tenure as RBI Governor ended in December 2023. He was succeeded by Sanjay Malhotra, who became the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. His new role as Principal Secretary-2 to the Prime Minister is expected to strengthen the government’s efforts in economic and administrative reform.
