Veteran Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was taken to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla on Saturday after experiencing minor health issues while in the hill station. The 78-year-old leader underwent routine medical tests and was discharged shortly after.
Naresh Chauhan, Principal Advisor (Media) to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, confirmed the development, stating, “Sonia Gandhi has been brought to the hospital for routine health check-up due to some minor health issues. Doctors are examining her. She is stable.”
According to reports, a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan was part of the tests. CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was also expected to visit the hospital to check on her condition.
Gandhi last made a public appearance on May 27, paying floral tribute to India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on his 61st death anniversary at Shanti Van in Delhi.
Notably, this isn’t the first health-related visit this year. In February, she was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi due to stomach-related discomfort and was discharged the following day.
In parallel, Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi were recently named accused numbers one and two, respectively, in the National Herald case by the Enforcement Directorate. The ED filed a prosecution complaint under the PMLA, alleging an illegal acquisition of ₹2,000 crore worth of AJL assets through Young Indian (YI), where the Gandhis are major shareholders.
The Congress party has dismissed these allegations as “vendetta politics” aimed at diverting attention from India’s economic challenges.
