“Started Crying While Calling Family,” Says Dhaba Owner on Sonam’s Surrender Night

Sonam Raghuvanshi, who had been missing after her husband Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, was finally traced and taken into police custody in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district.

According to Sahil Yadav, the owner of Kashi Dhaba where Sonam was found, she appeared at the eatery around 1 am on Sunday night. “She looked disturbed and asked some customers for help before walking up to me. She requested my phone to call her family and broke down while talking to them,” Mr Yadav told news agency ANI. He said she didn’t seem mentally well and was visibly shaken.

After speaking to Sonam’s family, Mr Yadav informed them about her location. A little while later, her brother called back and requested that he alert the local police. By around 2:30 am, the police arrived and took Sonam into custody. She later surrendered at the Nandganj police station.

Sonam and Raja were married on May 11 and had gone to Meghalaya for their honeymoon on May 20. The couple was last seen on May 23 after checking out from a homestay in Shillong. Soon after, they went missing and their rented vehicle was found abandoned.

After days of search, Raja’s body was recovered from a gorge on June 2. A machete, believed to be the murder weapon, was also found nearby. Sonam had remained untraceable until June 8, when she finally contacted her family.
