The 24 Years of Storyline Behind Renaming Twitter to X Company by Elon Musk

Twitter has been in the headlines for quite some time now. After its takeover by the new CEO and billionaire Elon Musk, the social media platform has fallen prey to a lot of backlash, criticisms and judgements.

Recently Elon Musk changed the name of Twitter to X.com and the logo was changed to the same as well. Some people liked the new interface while some felt that it was a completely unnecessary move and might ruin the reputation of the platform.

But do you know that Elon Musk did not come up with this idea just recently? The story has been weaving since 24 years and not most of us are aware of this.

Elon Musk, the founder of Zip2 corp created X.com in 1999. The website was created with a vision of bringing full scale banking and investment services on one site that offered almost everything like insurance services, accounts checking, mortgage lending and bonds.

In its first 2 months X.com attracted 10,000 customers but then in 2000 it was merged with Paypal, and the downfall started.

After that Musk was fired as Paypal’s CEO but the domain X.com was kept. After a few years, the billionaire bought X.com from Paypal on July 5, 2017 and the price was undisclosed.

After some days, on July 14, X.com was launched again but it had a blank page back then.

In December 2017, the site started redirecting the users to The Boring Company’s website for advertising their hat sales.

On October 4, 2022 Elon Musk acquired Twitter and described it as “an acceleration to creating X, the everything app”.

Finally on July 22, 2023 Elon Musk rebranded Twitter as X.com and the when you click on the domain, the X.com redirects you to Twitter.com.
