Tata Motors Launches India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Truck Trials for Green Transport

Tata Motors has initiated India’s first-ever trials of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks, marking a milestone in sustainable long-haul cargo transportation. The trial was officially launched on March 4, 2025.

During the event, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, emphasized hydrogen’s potential to revolutionize India’s transport sector by reducing emissions and promoting energy self-reliance. He praised Tata Motors for spearheading this transition toward green mobility.

The trial, set to run for up to 24 months, will deploy 16 hydrogen-powered trucks featuring both Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (H2-FCEV) technologies. These vehicles will be tested on key freight corridors, including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur, and Kalinganagar.

Expressing his vision for sustainable transport, Girish Wagh, Executive Director at Tata Motors, reiterated the company’s commitment to pioneering zero-emission solutions for long-haul trucking. He acknowledged the government’s support in enabling this shift toward cleaner mobility.

The newly launched Tata Prima H.55S and H.28 trucks, powered by H2-ICE and FCEV technology, offer an operational range of 300-500 km. Equipped with advanced safety and driver-assist features, these vehicles set new benchmarks for performance, efficiency, and driver comfort in the trucking industry.
