After years of anticipation, Tesla has officially entered the Indian market. The American electric vehicle (EV) giant is opening its first authorised showroom at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai, marking a significant step in India’s evolving EV landscape.
The first model to launch is the Tesla Model Y, a mid-size electric SUV that has already seen success in several global markets. For Indian buyers, Tesla will offer two variants: the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) version priced at Rs 59.89 lakh, and a Long Range RWD version priced at Rs 67.89 lakh (both prices ex-showroom). Known for its minimalist design, strong performance, and advanced features like autopilot capabilities, the Model Y is expected to appeal to both tech enthusiasts and luxury SUV seekers.
However, Tesla enters a market that already has several strong contenders in the premium EV space. Here are Tesla’s major rivals in India-
Kia EV6
The Kia EV6 made its Indian debut earlier this year following a showcase at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. Priced at Rs 65.9 lakh, the EV6 is available in a single GT-Line AWD variant. It comes equipped with an 84 kWh battery and boasts an ARAI-certified range of 663 km on a single charge. The EV6 offers bold styling, a feature-rich interior, and fast charging capabilities.

Hyundai Ioniq 5
Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 has received a positive response in India, thanks to its futuristic design and practical features. The current model houses a 72.5 kWh battery pack, offering a claimed range of 631 km and delivering 221 hp along with 350 Nm of torque. At a price of Rs 46.05 lakh, it presents a more affordable option in the premium EV segment. A facelift version is expected to arrive soon.

BMW iX1
BMW launched the iX1 in India earlier this year at a starting price of Rs 49 lakh. It features a 66.5 kWh battery and produces a peak output of 204 hp. Despite being one of the newer entrants in the luxury EV market, the iX1 has already received more than 1,500 bookings, making it one of the best-selling luxury EVs of the quarter. The model benefits from BMW’s premium branding and build quality.

Mercedes-Benz EQA
The EQA from Mercedes-Benz brings a mix of luxury and electric efficiency. Priced at Rs 66 lakh, the EQA comes with a 70.5 kWh battery pack and delivers a WLTP-certified range of 560 km. The powertrain generates 190 hp and 385 Nm of torque. Its refined driving dynamics and brand legacy make it a desirable choice for buyers looking to shift to electric without sacrificing comfort or performance.

BYD Sealion 7
BYD may not have the same brand recognition as Tesla or the German luxury makers, but it is quickly building a name in India. The Sealion 7 is available in RWD and AWD variants, powered by an 82.56 kWh battery. The RWD version delivers 308 hp and 380 Nm of torque, while the AWD variant significantly ups the performance with 523 hp and 690 Nm of torque. With its powerful specifications and competitive pricing, BYD is emerging as a serious contender.

Tesla’s arrival is expected to bring fresh momentum to India’s electric vehicle space. The Model Y is entering a well-contested segment, but its brand value, innovative features, and performance-driven approach give it a unique edge. As competition heats up and consumer interest in EVs grows, Tesla’s launch could be the turning point for India’s premium electric vehicle market.
