To Honour 75th Independence Day, GOI To Give Free Booster Dose To Adults From July 15 For Next 75 Days

The government of India is starting a special vaccination drive from Friday onwards, to vaccinate all the adults with free booster dose. As per the officials, this drive for booster dose will start from Friday and will continue for the next 75 days. Till now, amongst the target population of 77 crore in the 18-59 age group, less than 1% have been given the booster dose.

The government’s “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” celebrations to honour the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence will include an effort to increase the coverage of the third-dose, that’s why this drive will go on for 75 days. As quoted by news agency ANI:

“India is celebrating 75 years of independence. On the occasion of Azadi ka Amrit Kaal, it has been decided that from 15th July 2022 till the next 75 days, citizens above 18 years of age will be given booster doses free of cost: Union Minister Anurag Thakur”

As per an official, “More than nine months back, the majority of Indian population received its second dose. Studies conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and other international research organisations have indicated that antibody levels with both doses of the primary vaccination begin to decline about six months after the vaccination; a booster shot will boost the immune response.”

However, according to a government officials, as quoted by the news agency PTI, about 26% of the estimated 16 crore eligible people in the 60+ age group, as well as healthcare and frontline personnel, have already received the booster shot.
