Toxic Work Culture in Indian Startups Forces Bengaluru Woman to Quit Job

Workplace harassment is increasingly becoming a hot topic on social media, with many employees now speaking up. One such account from Bengaluru has captured public attention. A 25-year-old woman recently resigned from her position at a reputed startup, citing mental health concerns due to a toxic work environment.

She shared her experience on Reddit, revealing that she worked as a Product Experience Manager and had endured months of mental harassment. “It reached a point where I started having panic attacks before even stepping into the office,” she wrote. Eventually, she chose to prioritise her well-being and handed in her resignation.

What’s alarming is that most of her team members also quit around the same time, echoing similar experiences of an unhealthy workplace culture. “It wasn’t just me. Almost my entire team left because it had become unbearable,” she added.

She has now given herself four months to find a new role and is actively seeking opportunities in customer experience, operations, or product consulting, ideally in a hybrid or remote setup. She also welcomed support and advice from those who’ve faced similar challenges.

Reactions poured in online. “Bad work culture seems to be the norm in Indian startups,” one user commented. Another questioned, “Is there any Indian company left where employees can work in peace?”

Just weeks ago, another story emerged online where an employee broke down during a video call with their CEO. After being silenced repeatedly and yelled at, the individual had a severe panic attack and was rushed to the hospital by their mother.
