Troubles For INC In Jharkhand, CM Soren Ignores Cong’s Plea, Names Mahua Maji As RS Candidate

Amidst the Congress party claiming one Rajya Sabha seat from Jharkhand, its allie and the big brother in UPA govt, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has announced Mahua Maji as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election, ignoring the plea of the Congress party. CM Hemant Soren said the decision on Maji’s name has been taken by his father and JMM patriarch Shibu Soren. “We discussed names and finally Guruji (Shibu Soren) decided upon the name of Mahua Maji to be our Rajya Sabha nominee,” CM Soren told the media personnel. With this, JMM’s Maji is set to win the Rajya Sabha seat as the party has 30 members in the assembly, three more than 27 preference votes required to win the seat.

This has come as a huge shock for the Congress party which is the junior partner in the Hemant Soren government with 17 MLAs. Recently CM Soren even met the Congress chief Sonia Gandhu. As per the sources, Congress had requested the JMM to allocate a seat to it. Now the grand old party is yet to make any announcement on whether it would file its candidate or not, but with JMM fielding its candidate, the Congress party is left with no choice in Jharkhand. While the second seat for Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand is set to go to the BJP, which has fielded its state general secretary Aditya Sahu as its Rajya Sabha candidate.

Yesterday the Congress announced a list of its nominees for the upcoming election, fielding Rajeev Shukla and Ranjeet Rajan from Chhattisgarh, Ajay Maken from Haryana, Jairam Ramesh from Karnataka, Vivek Tankha from Madhya Pradesh, Imran Pratapgarhi from Maharashtra, Pramod Tiwari, Randeep Singh Surjewala and Mukul Wasnik from Rajasthan, while P Chidambaram has been fielded from Tamil Nadu.

Congress MLA Sanyam Lodha, a close aide of CM Ashok Gehlot, has said that the party would have to explain why no one was nominated from Rajasthan. “The Congress party should tell what is the reason for not making any Congress leader/worker from Rajasthan, a candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections,” he wrote in a tweet on Sunday. On the other hand, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera disappointed. Kheda, who is from Rajasthan, tweeted: “Maybe there is something missing in my penance.”

Responding to Pawan Kheda’s tweet, Congress leader and film actress Nagma wrote, “Our 18 years of penance also fell short in front of Imran Bhai.” Nagma tweeted: “Sonia Ji, our Congress president, had personally committed to accommodating me in Rajya Sabha in 2003/04. When I joined the Congress party on her behest we weren’t in power then. Since then, it’s been 18 years, they didn’t find an opportunity. Mr Imran is accommodated in RS from Maha. I ask, am I less deserving?”

While Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam, responding to Nagma, wrote that the “penance” of Salman Khurshid, Tariq Anwar and Ghulam Nabi Azad was of over 40 years, but they too were “martyred”. Suppression of talent is a ‘suicidal step’ for the party,” he tweeted in Hindi.

With the release of the Congress party’s list of its Rajya Sabha candidates, the infighting and disappointment amongst the party leaders has been coming to the fore, causing more trouble for the grand old party.
