T*rrorists Stayed in Baisaran Two Days Before Pahalgam Attack, Reveal Intelligence Sources

New revelations have emerged in the investigation into the tragic April 22 Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives. As per official sources, the terrorists involved in the strike were present in the Baisaran Valley two days prior to executing the assault. This critical detail came to light during the interrogation of one of the Over Ground Workers (OGWs) apprehended in connection with the case.

Investigating officials disclosed that the militants entered Pahalgam around April 15 and conducted surveillance at four key locations, with Baisaran Valley among them. The other sites under their watch included Aru Valley, a local amusement park, and Betaab Valley. Intelligence inputs suggest the attackers backed off from targeting these locations due to the presence of heightened security measures.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is heading the probe, has identified nearly 20 OGWs suspected of aiding the foreign militants. Several of these individuals are now in custody, while others are under close surveillance.

Intelligence findings point to the involvement of at least four OGWs in providing logistical support and assisting in the reconnaissance efforts. Investigators have also traced the use of three satellite phones in the area during the planning phase—two of which have already been tracked. Over 2,500 people have been questioned so far, and 186 individuals remain in custody for further interrogation, highlighting the scale and intensity of the investigation.

In the aftermath of the attack, security agencies launched sweeping raids across Jammu and Kashmir. Properties linked to members and sympathisers of banned outfits—including various Hurriyat Conference factions and Jamaat-e-Islami—were searched in several districts such as Kupwara, Handwara, Anantnag, Tral, Pulwama, Sopore, Baramulla, and Bandipora.

As per NIA insiders, “despite these groups’ proscribed status, they facilitated the development of a support network that allowed Pakistani terrorists to plan and carry out the Pahalgam massacre.”

Investigators are now combing through call records of individuals associated with these groups. Preliminary findings have revealed communication trails connecting some members of these banned outfits to OGWs believed to be directly involved in the deadly attack.
