In a landmark decision, the Union Cabinet has officially approved the inclusion of caste-based data in the upcoming national population census. This move paves the way for a deeper understanding of the country’s socio-economic fabric and could reshape how resources and welfare policies are allocated.
This is the first time in over 70 years that caste information—other than for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes—will be gathered as part of the official census process. The move marks a significant policy shift and has been long demanded by various political parties and social groups to address disparities more effectively.
Officials state that the caste-related data will be compiled alongside other key demographic indicators during the standard population count. The goal is to help policymakers frame more inclusive and data-driven strategies for public welfare and affirmative action.
By officially recognising caste diversity in statistical form, the government aims to promote equitable growth, social justice, and improved planning for education, employment, and welfare schemes. This step comes amid increasing demands for transparency and inclusivity in governance structures.
The exercise is expected to be carried out with utmost confidentiality and precision, ensuring accurate representation of India’s complex social hierarchy.
