April 18 marks a special day in the cricketing calendar—18 years since the Indian Premier League (IPL) began its journey, reshaping the sport in ways unimaginable. The inaugural night in 2008 was unforgettable, with Brendon McCullum of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) setting the tone by hammering a stunning 158* off just 73 balls, smashing ten boundaries and thirteen sixes against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). That innings lit the spark that would grow into the world’s biggest cricketing spectacle.
Now in its 18th season, the IPL has seen numerous icons emerge, but none more consistent than Virat Kohli. The Royal Challengers Bangalore star is the tournament’s all-time leading run-scorer, with an impressive 8,252 runs in 258 matches. His tally includes eight centuries and 58 half-centuries. Kohli’s loyalty is unmatched—he’s the only player to have represented a single franchise across all seasons.
Close on Kohli’s heels is Shikhar Dhawan, with 6,769 runs from 222 matches. Unlike Kohli, Dhawan has represented five teams over the years: Mumbai Indians, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, and Punjab Kings.
Rohit Sharma, who has won the IPL title five times as captain, is third on the all-time run-scorers list. With 6,710 runs in 263 matches, Sharma has been instrumental for both Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians, lifting the trophy with both franchises.
Australian opener David Warner, known for his aggressive batting style, follows closely with 6,565 runs from 184 matches. He has played for Delhi Capitals and led Sunrisers Hyderabad to their maiden title in 2016.
In fifth place is Suresh Raina, a cornerstone of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for much of his career. Raina retired after scoring 5,528 runs in 205 matches. He also featured for Gujarat Lions during CSK’s suspension.
On the bowling front, Yuzvendra Chahal leads the wicket-takers chart with 211 dismissals in 166 games. Initially part of Mumbai Indians, Chahal found his stride at RCB before moving to Rajasthan Royals. In 2024, Punjab Kings secured him for a hefty INR 18 crore.
Second on the list is Piyush Chawla, with 192 wickets in 192 matches. A veteran of multiple IPL-winning squads, Chawla has represented Kings XI Punjab, KKR—where he struck the winning runs in the 2012 final—CSK, and Mumbai Indians.
KKR’s Sunil Narine occupies the third spot with 187 wickets in 183 games. Since joining KKR in 2012, Narine has become one of the league’s most impactful players. His performances in KKR’s title-winning campaigns in 2012 and 2014 are legendary. In 2024, he enjoyed a phenomenal season, scoring 488 runs and taking 17 wickets, powering KKR to their third title and earning his third MVP award after previous wins in 2012 and 2018.
Also at 187 wickets is swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has played 181 matches. His IPL journey includes stints with RCB, Pune Warriors India, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has claimed the Purple Cap twice.
Ravichandran Ashwin completes the top five with 185 wickets in 218 matches. A seasoned campaigner, Ashwin has represented multiple franchises, including CSK, DC, KXIP, Rising Pune Supergiants, and Rajasthan Royals. In 2025, he returned to CSK, bringing his career full circle.
As the IPL celebrates 18 years, its legacy continues to grow—one record, one match, and one hero at a time.
