Walmart’s Walton Family Becomes World’s Richest in 2024 with $432.4 Billion Wealth

From a modest retail outlet in Arkansas launched in 1962 with a promise of “the lowest prices anytime, anywhere”, Walmart has grown into one of the world’s largest retail giants. In 2024, the Walton family, owners of the Walmart empire, were named the world’s richest family by Bloomberg, after their stock value surged by nearly 80% the previous year.

When the Walton family achieved this milestone, their collective wealth stood at an astonishing $432.4 billion.

Walmart was founded by Sam Walton and his brother Bud Walton over six decades ago. Though both brothers passed away more than 30 years ago, their legacy continues to thrive. The business empire was divided among seven heirs—Sam Walton’s children Alice, Jim, and Rob; his daughter-in-law Christy and grandson Lukas; and Bud Walton’s daughters, Ann and Nancy, according to Forbes. While retail remains Walmart’s core focus, the family has diversified into various sectors to expand their fortune.

Rob Walton, Sam Walton’s eldest son, assumed the role of chairman after his father’s death in 1992 and held the position until 2015. He officially stepped down from Walmart’s board last year. Today, Rob’s son-in-law Greg Penner serves as chairman. Rob Walton, with a net worth of $113.3 billion per Forbes, also bought the Denver Broncos NFL team for $4.7 billion in 2022 along with his daughter and son-in-law.

The family’s association with sports ownership doesn’t stop there. Stan Kroenke, husband of Bud Walton’s eldest daughter Ann Walton-Kroenke, owns multiple sports franchises including the St. Louis Rams, Denver Nuggets, Arsenal Football Club, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Mammoth, and Colorado Rapids, as reported by Bloomberg. Kroenke also served on Walmart’s board between 1996 and 2001.

Alice Walton, Sam’s only daughter, has amassed a fortune of around $113 billion, making her the world’s richest woman. She chose not to join Walmart’s board, instead dedicating herself to art and philanthropy. In 2011, she opened the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Jim Walton, the youngest of Sam Walton’s children, is the chairman of the family-owned Arvest Bank Group and holds a net worth of $112.1 billion, according to Forbes. His daughter, Alice Walton (different from her aunt), currently chairs the Walton Family Foundation, the family’s philanthropic arm.
