‘Was Team India Overconfident Against Pakistan?’: Virat Kohli Answers The Question Following Historic Defeat To Pakistan

The night of 24 October, 2021 is a night Indian cricket fans would want to forget. Pakistan’s Men’s T20I team became a part of history as it defeated Team India for the first time ever in World Cup history. It was the first instance, across 50-over and 20-over World Cup, that Team India was served a loss at the hands of Pakistan.

While most of the Indian fans slept heartbroken on the historic night after expressing their grief on social media, a part of the public called Team India’s ‘Overconfidence’ the reason behind the defeat. In the post-match conference, Virat Kohli, the current captain of India’s T20I team, was asked the same question by a reporter.

The reporter asked, “Was Team India overconfident against Pakistan, because the record states that India has been winning across the ICC events against Pakistan?”. Virat Kohli replied to the question by saying that he has no idea why people outside the field have an assumption like that. He wished that the people making such assumptions could actually put up their cricket kit and feel the pressure they are under while playing.

The captain added that their team does not get on the field to take anything lightly, especially against an opposition like Pakistan, which holds the capability to beat any team in the world. Virat called cricket ‘a game to be respected’ and stated that India respects the game. He added that they also think winning one game is not the end of the world.

Elaborating his reply further he went on to add that Cricket is above any individual and India does not take any opposition lightly or differentiate amongst them. He credited Pakistan’s marvellous performance for the win and accepted that Team India did not play well on the day. Pakistan won simply because they played better cricket and India lacked at various departments, but by no means did they take the opposition lightly.
