Google celebrates Indian Malayalam poet Balamani Amma's 113th birth anniversary with a doodle.

Balamani Amma was a Malayalam poet of  Indian origin.

Balamani Amma was born on 19 July 1909 in Punnayurkulam,  Kerala.

Amma had no formal education but was greatly influenced by her maternal uncle and his library.

She published more than twenty anthologies of poems, alongside other works including translations.

Her other well-known works were Amma, Mazhuvinte Katha, and Sandhya.

Amma was the recipient of various awards and honours like the Padma Bhushan (1987) Sahitya Akademi Award (1965) & Saraswati Samman(1995).

Amma has in turn served as an inspiration to later generations of Malayalam poets including Vallathol Narayana Menon & Nalapat Narayana Menon.

The Kochi International Book Fair gives a cash prize for authors in her name, the Balamani Amma Award.

Balamani Amma died on 29 September 2004 in Kochi.
