The Ruling party, BJP, has declared Mrs. Draupadi Murmu as its candidate for the upcoming presidential polls.

64-year- old Draupadi Murmu from Odisha is a BJP leader who started her political career as a councillor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 1997.

Later, she became the Vice chairperson of Rairangpur NAC – National Advisory Committee.

She served as the first woman  governor of Jharkhand from  2015 to 2021.

She even served as a minister of state in the BJD & BJP alliance government in Odisha for more than 2 years.

She won the assembly election from Rairangpur assembly constituency in the year 2000 & 2004.

Before entering the field of politics, she used to be a teacher.

Now she is the presidential candidate of the NDA alliance for the Indian presidential polls scheduled to be held on July 18 for which the results will be announced on July 24.

She'll compete against the UPA's presidential candidate Mr. Yashwant Sinha, former union finance minister.

Though, if elected, Mrs. Draupadi Murmu will be the first ever tribal lady to serve as the president of India.
