President Draupadi Murmu appointed DY Chandrachud as the 50th Chief Justice of India on Monday.
Justice Chandrachud will take oath on November 9, a day after incumbent
CJI Justice Uday Umesh Lalit
demits office.
Justice Chandrachud will serve as the CJI for 2 years & will demit office
on November 10, 2024.
Justice Chandrachud's father Justice YV Chandrachud was the 16th & the longest serving CJI of India.
Justice Chandrachud is presently the senior most SC judge after Justice Lalit, was elevated to the SC
on May 13, 2016.
Before his appointment to the SC, Justice Chandrachud served as the CJ of Allahabad High Court from
October 31, 2013.
He also served as a Judge of the Bombay High Court from March
2000 to October 2013.
Justice Chandrachud joined the apex court of the country in 2016.
He has been instrumental in several cases that have gone on to pave
the way for many reforms.
Justice Chandrachud has also been touted as a true advocate
of women's rights.
