Who Is Britain’s New Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi? Here’s All You Need To Know

Who is Nadhim Zahawi?

Nadhim Zahawi, is the newly appointed finance minister in the Boris Johnson government. Born in 1967, Mr. Zahawi hails from Badhdad. He moved to the United Kingdom (UK) with his parents when he was just a 9-year-old kid. His mother was a dentist while his father was a businessman. Mr. Zahawi is considered to be a stalwart among the Conservatives in the country. By degree, he is a chemical engineer.

Let’s have a loot at Mr. Zahawi’s journey:

In addition to serving as Gulf Keystone Petroleum’s chief strategy officer from January 2018 to February 2010, Zahawi co-founded the multinational Internet-based market research company YouGov. He was chosen to represent Stratford-upon-Avon in the 2010 general election following the retirement of the incumbent Conservative MP John Maples.

Nadhim Zahawi serves as the vice-chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) in the Kurdistan Region in Iraq, which benefits from Gulf Keystone Petroleum International’s secretarial services. Zahawi previously served as the company’s Chief Strategy Officer (CEO).

Zahawi’s political career:

Since this APPG’s founding in 2008/2009, Zahawi has served as either co-chair or vice-chair with other MPs like Meg Munn and Jason McCartney. From 1994 to 2006, Zahawi served as a councillor for the Conservative Party in the London Borough of Wandsworth. In 2010, he ran for and won the seat of Stratford-upon-Avon. The then-Prime Minister David Cameron named him to the cabinet’s policy division.

He was appointed by Boris Johnson to be the education secretary in 2021 after serving in positions as a junior minister for business and education. Now, following Rishi Sunak’s resignation from his position as finance minister in the Boris Johnson government, Nadhim Zahawi was appointed as the country’s new finance minister on Wednesday.

Though Mr. Zahawi’s appointment as the new finance minister, replacing Sunak, is seen as an effort to reassert control of the split in the party.
