Vadodara witnessed a tragic accident late Thursday night when a speeding car rammed into multiple vehicles near Muktanand Crossroads in the Karelibaug area, leaving a woman dead and four others injured. The driver, identified as 23-year-old law student Rakshit Ravish Chaurasia, was taken into custody following the incident.
Authorities suspect it may be a case of drunk driving. Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that Chaurasia seemed intoxicated and was heard shouting, “Another round, another round” after stepping out of the crashed vehicle. Enraged bystanders apprehended him and handed him over to the police after roughing him up.
Chaurasia, however, denied being under the influence. Speaking to the media, he claimed that his car lost control due to potholes while traveling at 50 kmph. He further explained that when the airbags deployed, he panicked and mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brakes. “I was not drunk. I just want to meet the victim’s family—it was my fault, and they deserve justice,” he stated.
The car belonged to Chaurasia’s friend, Mit Chauhan, who was in the passenger seat at the time of the crash.
Who is Rakshit Chaurasia?
As per the police, Rakshit Chaurasia, is a law student from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh and he might have been driving under the influence at the time of the accident. They confirmed that he has a valid driving license.
Officials stated that Chaurasia stays in a PG in Vadodara while pursuing his law studies. On Friday, Momaya informed reporters that the victim, Hemali Patel, was on her scooter when the accident took place. As per Rakshit’s LinkedIn profile, Chaurasia is a student at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Vadodara.
The incident has ignited outrage on social media, with many comparing it to the Pune hit-and-run case where a teenage accused was given a lenient punishment. Users questioned why Chaurasia was allowed to address the media despite being in custody. Authorities continue to investigate, while Patel’s grieving family and the injured victims await justice.
