Ruchira Kamboj, the nation’s first woman envoy, took charge as the new parliament representative of India to the United Nations. Ruchira is an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 1987 batch, who had been representing India in Bhutan. Now she has taken up T S Tirumurti’s position as Indian ambassador to the United Nations.
In a tweet, Ruchira added:
“Just in, as PR- designate to the @UN. Wonderful today to meet all my Ambassador friends in the Security Council. It is my deepest honour to serve my country in this new position. #India”
Ruchira is also India’s first woman envoy to be serving at the headquarters of thd world body’s in New York, US. She was the all-India woman topper in the 1987 civil services and the IFS batch.
She started her career in diplomacy in Paris, where she served as the Indian Embassy’s representative to France from 1989-1991. But Kamboj then went back to Delhi, where she served from 1991 to 1996 as an under-secretary in the ministry of external affairs’ Europe West Division.
She worked for the Indian High Commission in Port Louis, Mauritius, from 1996 to 1999 as First Secretary (Economic and Commercial) and Head of Chancery. From July 2017 to March 2019, she served as the high commissioner of India to South Africa and was also accredited to the Kingdom of Lesotho.

On May 17, 2019, Ruchira assumed charge as the Indian envoy to Bhutan. Now she has taken charge as India’s new permanent representative to the United Nations. In a tweet, she added:
“Today,have presented my credentials to the Secretary General of the United Nations @antonioguterres as Permanent Representative/Ambassador to the @UN. A privilege to be the first Indian woman to be given the honour to hold this position
To the girls out there,we all can make it!”
