Panic spread across Mumbai’s Powai area on Thursday after a man, identified as Rohit Arya, held 16 children and one woman hostage inside a studio. The operation ended after a tense one-hour rescue operation by the Mumbai Police and Fire Brigade, during which Arya was shot dead by police officers. The terrifying episode left locals shaken as the city tried to understand who Rohit Arya was and what drove him to this act.
Who was Rohit Arya?
According to officials, Rohit Arya appeared mentally disturbed and had invited several children to a studio at the Mahavir Classic Building for what he claimed was an “audition.” Once inside, he locked the doors and threatened to set the place on fire. The Mumbai Police said Arya also released a video message during the incident, claiming he wanted to speak to certain people and have “a simple conversation.”
He warned that if his demands were not met, he would “set everything on fire and harm himself and the children.” Senior Inspector Jeevan Sonawane confirmed that all children and the woman were safely rescued and handed back to their guardians after the operation.
Police Say Arya Wanted To Talk To Former Minister
As per Mumbai Police, Rohit Arya demanded to speak with former Maharashtra Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar, expressing grievances he allegedly had with the department. Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Satyanarayan stated that around 20 people were inside the studio when Arya began the hostage situation. He appeared to be carrying what looked like a gun, prompting an immediate emergency response.
How Police Rescued The Hostages
The Mumbai Fire Brigade received a call around 3 pm and reached the scene along with the police. Using hydraulic tools, officers cut through the grills to gain entry. Station Officer Abhijit Sonawane told Hindustan Times, “We made access for police, and they entered the studio. All hostages were rescued.” During the confrontation, Rohit Arya was shot by police after he reportedly acted violently, leading to his death.
The authorities are now verifying Arya’s background and mental state to determine what led to the shocking incident.
