Why Was Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Sardar Udham’ Rejected As India’s Official Entry At The 94th Academy Awards

Directed by Shoojit Sircar, starring Vicky Kaushal in the lead, Sardar Udham has been making headlines since its release. The audience was still not over the emotional trauma that the movie’s intense direction gave them, that it was shortlisted to be India’s official entry at the Oscars 2022.

A jury that was watching 14 films in Kolkata, to select one of them that would go on to become India’s official entry at the Oscars 2022, had shortlisted ‘Sardar Udham’ too. The movie, however, lost to ‘Kazhangal’. What was the reason that made Kazhangal suitable to represent India at the Oscars, but not Sardar Udham?

As per TOI, Indraadip Dasgupta, who was a part of the selection jury, explained the reason why Shoojit Sircar and Vicky Kaushal’s Sardar Udham did not make it to the the most prestigious film awards. He explained that Sardar Udham is a very well made picture with exceptional cinematography that lives up to the international standards, but it is because of its length that makes it impossible for them to select it for the 94th Academy Awards.

The movie harps on the Jallianwala Bagh massacre scene, which adds more to the movie’s length. He also added that it is an honest effort to make a lavish film on an unsung Indian freedom fighter but in the process, goes on to project India’s hatred towards the British. In this era of globalization, it is not fair to hold on to such hatred, added Dasgupta. He further called Koozhangal a truly ‘Indian’ film with a global appeal and the most honest contender among all the shortlisted films.

Sardar Udham Review: It’s All About Filling Your Eyes With Tears And Heart With Pride

Sardar Udham has received worldwide applause for its honest storytelling and like-never-before cinematography. Vicky Kaushal has specifically been praised for his role of Shaheed Udham Singh and Shoojit Sircar has also received public praise for his exceptional direction. However, this was not enough for the movie to make it to the Best International Feature Film Category at the Academy Awards!
