History and Significance of Father’s Day

The history of Father’s Day dates back over a century and has its roots in the US. The credit is given to Sonora Smart Dodd. She was inspired by Mother’s Day and felt that Fathers need to be appreciated too and deserve a day of recognition.  She wanted to honor her own father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who had raised Sonora and her five siblings as a single parent after their mother passed away during childbirth. Sonora was particularly moved by her father’s dedication and sacrifices in raising his children. Sonora spread this idea to local religious organizations and leaders and advocated that the celebrations must be held on her father’s birthday which is on June 5th.  However, it took several decades for Father’s Day to be nationally recognized in the United States. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation declaring Father’s Day as a national holiday, to be celebrated on the third Sunday in June.
